Life transitions are hard; they may reveal unhelpful patterns or habits, put strain on relationships, and trigger past wounds. We may feel lonely, resentful, or anxious. Loss or upheaval can lead to accumulated stress, self-criticism, shame, or numbing behaviors. While these experiences are uncomfortable, together we can learn to welcome them as wise messengers, pointing us towards growth and healing. The deep respect I feel for my clients is supported by a trauma informed and attachment-oriented background.

Reaching out for support and having a desire to grow and expand emotionally is not always an easy path though it is full of depth and rewards. I have been working in social service for over 20 years, meeting clients in their unique place and assisting with them with process that brought them to therapy.

I am a licensed therapist in Oregon and Colorado with over 20 years of experience in the helping field, and I work with couples, parents, and adult individuals.

I specialize in issues important to teenagers and young adults/families, including issues related to family dynamics, depression, anxiety, bipolar/schizophrenia, substance abuse concerns, transracial adoptions, grief, LGBTQ dynamics, racial identity, gender transitioning process, and abandonment trauma. My relational approach to therapy can help you gain awareness of your road blocks and provide you with the tools (skills/coping strategies) you have for your own growth.

I have experience providing individual therapy to those dealing with anxiety, stress, ADHD, trauma, and substance use. I know that life can bring about loss in many forms and believe in the healing power of a therapeutic relationship. I think the best type of therapy is collaborative and will work with you to identify goals and make progress towards those goals. I truly believe the key of success within therapy is to create a safe space by building rapport and trust. My style is to provide an empathetic listening ear in a non-judgmental space. The most insightful thing that I have learned as a social worker is that every person is the expert on their own life and as a therapist I am here to walk alongside that person and offer guidance, life skills and an alternate non-biased point of view. My approach is to provide quality care by being genuinely curious, empathic and using a strength-based approach.

Grief and trauma. When experienced, these can define us. But it doesn’t have to be that way. People are also shaped by their families and culture, their experiences, and the stories they create about themselves. I too have experienced grief and trauma and through our work together, I will help you find your voice and create a new narrative – one of empowerment, acceptance, and hope. I use a variety of evidence base practices to help collaborate with the family in restoring balance. Is your teen defiant, distant or abusing substances? I specialize with working with adolescents with a variety of substance use and/or mental health symptoms. I thoroughly enjoy working with teens who have addiction and mental health issues.

Angie Peterson is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Oregon with 18 years of experience. She graduated with a Bachelors in Social Work and a Masters in Social Work from Walla Walla University. Angie believes in using cognitive behavioral therapy, solution focused therapy, client centered and motivational interviewing. She has experience working with individuals struggling with anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, negative self-talk, grief and loss, life changing situations, and end of life concerns. In her spare time, Angie enjoys spending time with family, traveling, scrapbooking, and attending soccer games.
