I have worked extensively with clients grappling with a diverse range of issues, such as depression, anxiety, relationship challenges, trauma, and various addictions. I have experience providing individual therapy to those dealing with anxiety, stress, ADHD, trauma, and substance use. I know that life can bring about loss in many forms and believe in the healing power of a therapeutic relationship. I think the best type of therapy is collaborative and will work with you to identify goals and make progress towards those goals. I take a holistic approach to counseling and focus on the importance of the roles that psychological, biological, environmental, spiritual, and social factors play in a client’s life. I subscribe to a developmental perspective and take an attachment-based approach, and I believe that the therapeutic relationship between the client and the counselor is ultimately the key to an effective counseling process. Where our attention goes, our energy flows, and there are plenty of distractions to pull us out of present-moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, behaviors and choices. I combine 28 years of clinical experience, working with clients of all ages and issues, with mindfulness practice, to help you flourish. I’m Rylan, I’m a licensed therapist (LMFT) who works with children, teens, and adults from a client-centered approach using mindfulness, narrative-building and self-compassion. Therapy is a collaborative process, so we will build your ideal outcomes together. I specialize in working with both children and adults with ADHD, depression, social anxiety, isolation, motivation and school/work problems, as well as family and relationship stress, family planning/parenthood, and divorce/separation issues. I often work with creative and artistic folks, and professionals of all types.

Things are rough right now. It makes sense that many of us are struggling to keep going, overextending ourselves till we’re burntout, and feeling stuck in patterns that aren’t moving us towards the lives we want to live. I experience these challenges too and I know how important it is to have support. I offer in-person Covid-cautious therapy services to queer and trans individuals, couples, friends, and polycules in Portland, OR who long to root down and create a better world together.

As a therapist, I invite my clients to know and radically accept themselves more fully so they can create change from a place that is wise, honest, and compassionate. My clients often arrive anxious, hopeless, in painful cycles of conflict, and having tried many other therapists. They feel disconnected from themselves and their relationships. I guide couples and individuals toward the changes they want to see in their relationship by creating an accepting space to be curious, receive support, and get direct coaching on how to do it differently. I believe in a slow, deep, and holistic approach.

I see myself as a relational therapist. Someone that is always looking into how our current and past relationships shape our lives. I enjoy working with couples and individuals. My intent is always to meet you with an open mind and a gentle heart; however, I believe that therapy is at times about accountability, too. Most importantly, I want my clients to have a place to land where, for just a small portion of their week, they feel seen and accepted for who they are and what they want to become. I especially like working with adults that may have suffered childhood trauma and help them understand the current impact it may have.

The therapeutic relationship is a very important part of therapy. Often times clients explore their relational attachments, bonds and experiences through their relationship with their therapist. I aim to provide a safe and comfortable environment. I believe everyone can achieve an optimum state of health. Often times humans do not change until facing a crisis, or having suffered. Together we can help you to learn more about who you are and how you relate to the world around you and what may need to change. I have current availability for Telehealth sessions. Life can be challenging in so many ways and at times overwhelming. I offer a supportive space to explore what kinds of changes you can implement to feel and cope better. Whether the root of your stress is a struggle with food or disordered eating, worry, depression or situational stressors, I offer a place to collaboratively explore solutions and help implement the changes that support feeling better.

I have had the privilege of witnessing people undergo the slow, extremely subtle and remarkable journey of healing and self-transformation. This process of psychological growth is astoundingly complex, multilayered, circular and even mysteriously numinous in its unfolding. My philosophy as a therapist is primarily on core transformation rather than merely symptom management and needless to say, I strongly believe in the centrality of the therapeutic relationship as a significant healing agent. During our initial sessions, we will explore the issues at hand, and work together to create a plan for addressing them that will help you create a more meaningful and vibrant life. Most of my clients will see a gradual lifting of symptoms within a month and will build on new perspectives and improvements thereafter.

I specialize in grief/loss and anxiety, and also help people with depression, addictive behaviors and individuals who experience an unhealthy relationship with food.
